Watched a sunset at Rocky Butte with a stranger who pointed out a lenticular cloud and now I keep looking up
I was up at Rocky Butte in Portland last Friday just killing time before meeting friends, and this older guy with a tripod asked if I saw the cloud sitting over Mt. Hood like a stack of pancakes. I said I just thought it was a weird flat cloud, and he told me it was a lenticular, the kind that forms when wind hits the mountain and makes waves in the air. We stood there about 20 minutes while the sun turned it pink, and he showed me three other shots on his camera from the same spot over the past year. Now I catch myself checking the sky every time I drive east on 84, so what are the best spots around here for catching these things?
Ever notice how one random chat can mess with your head like that? My buddy had almost the same thing happen to him up at the Vista House, some guy with a scope got him hooked on watching the sky and now he plans his whole drive home around it. He says the east wind days in winter are the best bet, when the mountain gets that big cap sitting on top of it. He also swears by the pullout on Larch Mountain road, though he admits the view from the Women's Forum is easier if you don't want to drive far. Funny how you can live here for years and never look up until somebody points it out to you.
