Spent 2 years chasing mammatus clouds with a cheap lens before I learned to look up first

I used to drive all over Colorado trying to catch cool cloud formations. Spent way too much gas circling the plains near Fort Collins. Last month I was just sitting in my backyard waiting for a storm to pass and happened to glance straight up. There it was, the best shelf cloud structure I'd seen in person, right above my own house. I had been so focused on driving to the horizon that I never checked the sky directly over me. Now I always scan a full 360 degrees before I even grab my keys. Has anyone else had that moment where the perfect shot was literally above your head the whole time?
