My brother convinced me mammatus clouds aren't actually storm predictors

He showed me a paper from NOAA that says they just form from sinking air, not necessarily tornadoes. Has anyone else had their cloud knowledge totally shattered by a random family member? I feel like a beginner again.

Oh man, virga clouds are so wild! I remember standing in the Arizona desert once watching a storm dump all this dramatic rain from a black cloud, but nothing hit the ground. Just this ghostly curtain of rain evaporating halfway down. It makes you feel like you're going crazy, lol. Virga can actually kick up dust storms too when the cold air from the falling rain hits the hot ground and just blasts everything sideways. Makes hiking super confusing when you see a storm coming but get no water from it.
