TIL that turning down my thermostat at night saved me $27 a month, but not for the reason I thought
So last January I started setting the heat to 62 at night instead of 68, mostly to see if it would shave anything off the bill. First month the gas bill dropped about $27, which I was pretty happy about, but then I got the actual usage report and the therms barely moved. The savings came from the fact that I stopped bumping it back up to 70 every morning, so the house was staying at a steady low temp instead of me blasting it twice a day. I sat down and did the math on it, and most of my old bill was just me fighting the thermostat with my own impatience. My place is old and drafty, so I always figured big swings were the only way to stay warm, but it turns out steady and low beat up and down every time. Now I want to know if anyone has tried a smart thermostat in a place like this without it turning into a whole hobby. Did it actually help, or did you spend more time messing with your phone than you saved on gas?
