That time I thought a soot sponge was a gimmick - turns out I was dead wrong

Picked up one of those soot sponges at the supply house in Denver about 6 months ago after the guy behind the counter swore by it. I figured it was just another overpriced cleaner that would fall apart after one use. First job I tried it on was a heavy creosote buildup in a prefab fireplace, and it ate through the mess in half the time my wire brush usually takes. Has anyone else had better luck with a specific brand of soot sponge over another?

Half the time my wire brush usually takes" - that part got me. I actually bought one for my chimney at home thinking I'd save cash doing it myself. Spent more time trying to figure out how to not get soot all over my living room carpet than the actual cleaning. Did you have to tape anything off or did you just go for it?

@stellam89 yeah I read somewhere you're supposed to put a drop cloth over everything and tape the edges. I tried it once, still ended up with soot on my couch. Not worth the hassle honestly.
