Question about how I clean a firebox now versus 15 years ago
I used to scrape fireboxes down to bare brick with a wire brush and a putty knife, and I thought that was just how the job went. Now I hit the same firebox with a soft hand brush and a shop vac with a HEPA filter, and I finish in 20 minutes instead of an hour. The change came about 4 years ago after a customer in Dayton called me back twice because my scraping knocked loose mortar dust all over her rug. I still get weird looks from old timers when I skip the heavy scraping, but my callbacks went from about 8 a year down to one. What method are you all using on older fireboxes with soft brick?
