Guy at the supply house in Des Moines told me my brush was too big, and he was right
Last Tuesday an old sweep named Ray watched me load up for a job and flat out told me a 12 inch brush on a 8x12 flue was a waste of my time and arm. I blew him off at first, but he said the bristles never touch the corners on a rectangle so I was basically just polishing the middle. Swapped to a 10 inch round with a whip head and cut my scrub time on that Springfield job from 40 minutes down to 15. Anybody else running smaller brushes than the book says on square flues?
Got a question about the whip head though, does the fling on that thing tear up the mortar joints on older brick flues? Running a smaller brush makes sense for coverage but if the whip is beating the joints apart then you're just trading scrub time for repair time later. Curious what Ray says about that trade off.
