PSA: a bookstore clerk in Portland flipped through my cat book and said 'this is a shelf book, not a lap book' and now I finally get how to shop for these
I was at Powell's in Portland about 3 weeks ago browsing the pet section and I had this huge 4 pound cat photo book in my hands. The clerk walking by just said 'that's a shelf book, not a lap book' and kept going. I stood there for a second and then it clicked. There's a whole difference between cat coffee table books you actually flip through on the couch and ones that just sit there looking pretty. The shelf books are the oversized ones with tiny captions and like 300 pages of artsy black and white shots. The lap books are the funny ones, weird cat faces, meme style captions, the kind you hand to a guest so they laugh for 10 minutes. I used to buy the pretty ones and then wonder why nobody ever opened them. Now I check two things before I buy: can I hold it with one hand, and does any page make me snort. That clerk saved me probably $120 over the next few months. What's your test for telling a shelf book from a lap book?
