Update: the 1908 farmhouse trim I stripped in Guthrie actually came back to life
I spent about 14 hours over 3 weekends stripping paint off the window casings in my 1908 farmhouse in Guthrie. The trim had 5 coats on it, and under all that was tight grain Douglas fir that I figured was long gone. A heat gun and a dull scraper got me down to bare wood without gouging anything, which surprised me since I'm pretty new at this. Hit it with a coat of boiled linseed oil and the grain popped like it was milled yesterday. Anyone here messed with old growth fir that's been painted over for decades, did you oil it or go straight to shellac?
