Spent a whole day trying to fix a sagging header in a 1920s house

The old place in Springfield had a door frame that was out by over an inch. Thought it was just a shim job, but the header was totally rotted behind the trim. Had to carefully pull the whole assembly, sister in a new LVL, and rebuild the frame. What should have been a 2 hour fix took me 8. Anyone have a better method for checking for rot before you start tearing into old trim?

Nah, that's just how old houses roll.
