My old boss at the tire shop in Dayton told me to always take the free training, even the boring safety stuff, and it got me a $6/hr raise 14 months later
When I worked at a tire shop off Route 35 in Dayton, my boss Ray was this quiet guy in his 60s who had been in the trade forever. Every time corporate emailed about some free online class, he would print it out and leave it on my toolbox with a sticky note that just said "do it." I blew most of them off because I was 22 and thought I already knew how to mount a tire. One was a brake inspection cert through a parts brand, and I only did it because Ray asked me point blank if I had finished it yet. Took me like 4 hours over two slow afternoons, no big deal. About a year later I applied at a dealership in Centerville and the service manager pulled up that cert in the system and said it saved him from having to send me to a 2 day class. Got the job and it was $6 an hour more than I was making. Ray retired before I could tell him thanks, so I am telling you guys instead. Do the boring free training. But I'm curious, has a random cert like that ever actually paid off for anyone else here, or did I just get lucky with timing?
