I called every networking group a sham until I joined one in Boise

For years I figured those meetup groups were just people handing out business cards and fake smiles, you know? Then last spring I walked into a small one at a coffee shop on 5th Street and the guy next to me ended up subcontracting me for a 3 month project worth about 8 grand. It wasn't some magic formula, just a guy who needed someone who actually showed up on time. Anyone else had a random meetup actually pay off, or am I just lucky?
