Hot take: I turned down a management job to stay hourly and it worked out

Last spring I had to decide between a team lead spot at my shop in Denver or staying on as a regular tech. I told my boss no thanks because I didn't want the 40+ hour weeks and constant meetings. Six months later I'm pulling in more overtime pay than the lead makes and I don't have to deal with the scheduling drama. Anyone else ever turn down a promotion and feel fine about it?

Respectfully, that overtime might not be there if the economy slows down.

The overtime pay being there probably depends on what kind of shop you work at. A lot of places cut hours the second they think things might slow down. Plus having a lead role usually means more stability and a better shot at higher paying jobs later. Not saying you made the wrong call but acting like it's a guaranteed win forever is a stretch. Six months is a pretty short time to declare victory.
