Unpopular opinion: the $75 deposit for an open trailer was worth every penny

I shipped my Civic from Phoenix to Portland last month and the broker quoted me $650 for enclosed, then hit me with a $75 deposit before he'd even book it. I sat on that for 9 days because I was sure it was a scam, calling around and reading reviews at midnight. Turns out the deposit was just his booking fee and the actual carrier picked up 2 days later with zero damage. The part that killed me was I almost paid $150 more with another company out of pure worry. Did anyone else get spooked by the deposit thing or was it just me overthinking it?
