Lost $400 on a carrier that never showed up in Phoenix

Booked a guy through a random website last month to haul my Civic from Phoenix to Dallas, paid half upfront, and he stopped answering texts the day before pickup. Has anyone else dealt with these ghost brokers or found a way to verify a carrier before sending money?
