Got quoted $650 to move a Subaru from Phoenix to Denver last Monday, then the driver called from a truck stop wanting $400 more in cash

I had already paid a $150 deposit to the broker, so I was stuck either way. The car showed up 5 days late with a cracked windshield and nobody would answer the phone about it. Did I have any real move here besides eating the extra $400, or is going direct to a carrier the only way to avoid this?
