My uncle swore I'd save $600 hauling my truck myself instead of paying a shipper, and boy was he wrong
When I moved from Phoenix to Denver last spring, my uncle Dave kept telling me to just rent a trailer and drag my F-150 myself, said I'd save at least $600 over a broker quote. He's towed boats his whole life so I figured he knew what he was talking about. So I rented a U-Haul car hauler for $340 and headed out on I-17. Two hours in, near Flagstaff, the trailer tire blew and I sat on the shoulder for 4 hours waiting on roadside help, which cost me another $180. By the time I hit the mountains past Vail the truck was fighting me on every climb and my fuel bill was double what I planned. All in, I spent close to $900 and lost a whole day. The broker quote I turned down was $720 door to door. Has anyone else had family talk them out of a shipper and lived to regret it?
