Found out my old tent's coating was the issue, not the leaks
Been patching a 14 year old tent for months. Every rainstorm meant wet knees. Last Tuesday I read on a gear forum that the polyurethane coating breaks down over time and turns sticky. I touched the inside of the fly and sure enough, it was tacky. That's what was causing the water to soak through the seams. All my seam sealing and tape was useless because the base layer was gone. So now I'm looking at a $250 replacement or trying a new tent. Has anyone actually stripped and recoat an old fly successfully, or is it a waste of time?
