Appreciation post: I thought fiber for my 3 vans was a waste of cash, then the copper line in Gary died twice in one month
Back in 2021 when our old cable plan hit $260 a month I almost went with fiber for the crew's internet, the mobile hotspot setup in the vans, all of it. I figured a plumber with 3 trucks does not need fancy fiber, copper was fine for 15 years. Then last spring the line at our little office near downtown Gary went down on a Tuesday, and again 9 days later, and both times the provider gave me a window of "sometime between 8 and 5." We lost 2 dispatch days and a service call got pushed to the next morning. The fiber guy who came out to quote us walked the whole building, showed me where the old copper ran behind the water heater, and said the splice was probably soaked. He was right. Six months in now and we have not dropped once, and the bill is $140 flat with no surprise fees. Has anyone else made the copper to fiber switch after a run of outages, and did the price hold steady after the first year?
