Was dead set against hostel kitchens until I gave it a real shot in Lisbon

I always thought hostel kitchens were dirty chaos. Last month in Lisbon I had no cash left for restaurants so I tried the one at Home Lisbon Hostel. Clean pans, labeled shelves, and people actually washed their dishes right away. Saved about $40 in two days eating pasta and veggies. Anyone else have a good hostel kitchen story?

That Lisbon hostel must be the exception. I've seen too many kitchens with piled up dirty dishes and people leaving half-eaten food on counters. Hostel kitchens are a gamble. Some are fine, but more often than not you're dealing with burnt pans and someone's mystery leftovers in the fridge.

My buddy Mike had a similar experience in Barcelona at this place called Kabul. He was skeptical too until he found a whole pack of spaghetti and a jar of sauce someone left behind with a sticky note saying "free to a good home." Ended up cooking dinner with two Australians who shared their garlic and olive oil, and they all saved enough for a fancy rooftop bar later.
