Had to pick between a hostel and a campsite in Madrid last month

I was trying to save money for a three week trip and the hostel was $35 a night versus a campsite for $12 a night outside the city. I went with the campsite but then spent $8 each way on the bus to get into Madrid every day. Did I actually save anything or should I have just sucked it up and paid for the hostel?

Buddy of mine did the same thing in Barcelona and it ended up costing him more once he added up the bus fares.
