DAE think free roadside maps were a game-changer for budget trips?

They not only got you where you needed to go but often had ads for cheap lodgings and food. Nowadays, everything is digital and usually points you to pricier options.

Those maps were basically a local's guide on paper, highlighting the affordable spots the big apps ignore now. The digital shift really did filter out a lot of the budget-friendly, mom-and-pop type places. You got a curated experience for free that actually saved you money.

My cousin still uses a 2008 guidebook for Rome and finds family-run trattorias with €10 pasta plates. The algorithms just push the places that can afford the ad spend now.
