Appreciation post: free museum days saved my Portland trip

Was on a strict budget in Portland last month. Found out the art museum does free admission every fourth Friday. Also the Japanese garden has a discounted rate after 5pm on Mondays. Saved like $40 total. Anyone know other cities with good free museum programs?

Did you check if any of the museums in Portland do pay-what-you-can days too? The art museum does that on certain Thursdays I think, and it saved me even more than the free Friday when I was there. Also, the zoo has a discount if you show a library card from a participating county, which is a weird but real thing.

The pay-what-you-can Thursdays are a solid tip too, @bennett.luna hit it with that one. Portland's got a whole network of cheap culture spots if you dig around, and I also found the science museum does a free day on certain Sundays, so that's another $20 back in your pocket for basically the same effort.
