Almost got scammed by a fake hostel booking in Prague

I was booking a dorm bed for $12 a night on a random site I found through a Google search. The guy at the front desk told me the reservation never came through and I'd have to pay again. Turns out the site was a copycat that just collected credit card info. Has anyone else run into fake booking sites for hostels?

Oh man, that exact thing almost happened to me in Barcelona. I found a hostel for like 10 euros a night through some random Google ad and thought I was being so smart. Showed up and the guy was like "yeah, we've never heard of that booking site, happened to three other people today." Really scary because I had already put my credit card info in. Now I only book through Hostelworld or the actual hostel's own website, never trust some random site that pops up first in search.
