My old roommate laughed at me for spending 3 weeks on a cardboard sword, then she asked to borrow it for a con in Denver
I built a 4 foot sword out of cardboard, wood glue, and a $3 can of gray spray paint from Walmart. It took 3 weeks of nights and probably 20 hours total. She kept saying I was wasting my time and that real cosplayers just buy props online. Then her $80 foam order showed up cracked in half two days before the con. I handed her mine in the parking lot and she wore it all weekend. She apologized on the drive home. I still bring it up at least once a year. So what is the cheapest thing you have built that ended up outlasting someone's store bought gear?
My cheapest build that outlasted store bought stuff was a duct tape wizard staff I made in like 2 hours for a ren faire. Total cost was maybe 6 bucks in tape and a broom handle I already had in the garage. My buddy dropped 90 dollars on a resin staff and the top snapped off before lunch. Mine is still in my closet 4 years later and honestly looks like a sad mummy but it never broke.
