My snake plant finally took off after I stopped watering it for a month

I kept killing snake plants for two years. Every single one would get mushy at the base and flop over. I read online that they want dry soil, but I still watered mine every Saturday like clockwork. Last spring I went to Portland for 12 days and forgot to set any reminder. When I got back the leaves looked darker and felt firmer. So I pushed it further, waited until the soil cracked at the top before giving it a cup of water. It shot out a new pup within 3 weeks. Now I only water when the pot feels light, about every 4 to 5 weeks. Has anyone else found that their plant did better after they just ignored it for a stretch?
