My neighbor said my vegetable garden was 'just weeds'

I was showing my friend Mark my new raised bed in the backyard last Saturday, full of young carrots and kale. My neighbor leaned over the fence, pointed at the arugula and said, 'You know, that's all just going to bolt and turn into weeds, right?' It really got under my skin because I'd spent weeks getting the soil mix right. Has anyone else had someone dismiss their garden like that?

Your neighbor sounds like the kind of person who calls dandelions a problem instead of free salad. Some folks just can't recognize food that doesn't come in plastic. Let your arugula bolt and collect the seeds for next year, that'll really bake his noodle. Gardens are a constant learning process, not a picture perfect contest.
