The day I quit 'Infinite Jest' after 200 pages of footnotes

Honestly, I spent 3 hours on chapter one just because I kept jumping to the back for the footnotes, and I realized I had no clue what the actual story was about. Has anyone else given up on a book because the format itself was exhausting?

Those footnotes are half the fun if you commit to them.

@davis.keith I'd argue the footnotes are a gimmick that kills any reading momentum. Wallace should have put that material into the main text or cut it entirely.
