Gave up on a 900 page fantasy epic after 3 false starts, the map was my final straw
I kept picking up this big series everyone raves about, tried 3 times over two weeks. The prose was fine but I got lost every single time because the map had like 40 city names that never showed up in the actual chapters. Finally on Tuesday I flipped to the glossary and saw there were 14 different factions with similar sounding names, and I just closed the book for good. Has anyone else quit a book purely because the worldbuilding was too much homework to keep straight?
Three weeks was exactly how long I lasted on a sci-fi doorstop where page 200 introduced a time travel paradox that made the map of the galaxy look like a joke, and I literally put it down to check my phone for restaurant menus instead.
