That statistic in The Body Keeps the Score still rattles me
I picked up that book last month after my therapist mentioned it, and one stat in chapter 4 stopped me cold. It said something like 70 percent of kids who experience trauma end up with a chronic health condition by age 40. I had to put the book down and just stare at my wall for a minute. I work as a nurse in Portland, and I see that pattern every single shift now, but reading the number spelled out made it feel so much heavier. Has anyone else found a single fact in a book that just rewired how they see their own job or family?

And that number gets even darker when you read the follow up about how the body basically keeps score with inflammation and stress hormones. I remember hearing a doctor on a podcast say that childhood trauma is the hidden cause behind so many autoimmune cases, and it made me rethink every patient chart I've ever skimmed. It's like the book hands you this lens and suddenly you can't unsee the link between someone's backstory and their blood work. My own family has this history we never talked about, and now I catch myself wondering which aches and pains are just age and which ones are old wounds showing up in a new form. That chapter alone should be required reading for anyone going into medicine, honestly.
