My librarian said one thing about a dog-eared copy that stopped me cold
I was complaining to her about how beat up my copy of The Road looked after I loaned it out 3 times, and she said the worn pages are proof the book actually did its job. Now I look at my shelf and the books I loved hardest are the ones falling apart, and I can't bring myself to replace them. Anyone else keep a copy that's basically held together with tape?
My copy of The Road is in the same shape. Spine cracked, cover bent, coffee stains on like ten pages. I've had it since high school and I will never swap it for a clean one. A book that still looks new after you loved it means you didn't really read it, you just looked at it. The tape and the rips are like a record of everywhere you took it and who you handed it to. Brand new copies on my shelf make me feel nothing. The beat up ones feel like they belong to me.
