A Song of Ice and Fire broke me, even though I hate fantasy dragons

My brother pushed the series on me for a year, always saying the politics beat any thriller he read. I finally caved after a 14 hour flight to Phoenix and the Red Wedding hit me on page 480, I had to put the book down in the airport. Am I the only one who went in expecting popcorn and got gut punched by something that good?
