That old bookbinder at a shop in Portland told me I was ruining my spine by using PVA glue on leather
He spent 20 minutes showing me how wheat paste breathes better and I switched over after my 3rd project cracked at the hinge, has anyone else run into a purist who made you rethink your whole technique?

Heard my buddy switched to wheat paste after a master binder told him his book was basically trash.

Wait, did that master binder actually call his book trash or just say the binding method was bad? I read somewhere that a lot of old school bookbinders really hate modern glue because it dries out and cracks over time. Honestly, wheat paste has been used for centuries and is super forgiving if you mess up. Ngl, I've heard horror stories about people using PVA glue on old paper and ruining the whole thing because it's too stiff. Tbh, your buddy might have gotten solid advice if that master knows what theyre talking about. Wheat paste isn't fancy but it works for a lot of projects.
