Hot take: the old guy at the Dayton bindery taught me more in 10 minutes than a year of videos
I was at a small bindery supply shop in Dayton last week picking up some linen thread and PVA glue, and an older guy behind the counter watched me grab a roll of 18/3 thread without even looking at it. He asked what I was sewing and I said a 200 page journal, and he just shook his head and said "that thread will chew through your signatures if you pull it tight, try 25/3 and back off the tension." I had been fighting torn folds for weeks on my last 3 projects and blamed my paper. Turns out I was using thread that was too thin for the weight and yanking it like I was tying down a truck. I switched on my current project and the signatures are laying flat for the first time in months. This guy has been binding since the 80s and nobody ever told me this in any tutorial I watched. Has anyone else had a supply shop person drop knowledge like that on them, and what did they catch you doing wrong?
