TIL a lady at a garage sale in Dayton told me to quit buying books by the cover and check the copyright page first
I used to grab paperbacks at estate sales based only on the cover art, and I ended up with 4 books last month that were book club editions worth about 50 cents each. A lady running a sale off Patterson Blvd in Dayton saw my stack and said, "Honey, flip to the copyright page before you pay, look for 'First Edition' and the number line." She showed me how a number line starting with 2 means it's a second printing, not a first. Now I spend the extra 10 seconds per book and my last haul had two actual first printings I would have missed. How do you all spot a real first edition without looking like a weirdo holding up the line?
