Hot take: I thought torque specs on a boiler manway were just paper pushing, then a 2 inch stud let go at 60 psi
I used to think hitting the book number on manway bolts was for the engineers, not for me. Last month on a package boiler in Gary, we rushed a cover up and skipped the star pattern, just ran them down with a 1 inch gun. At 60 psi the gasket let go and a 2 inch stud shot past my shoulder into the wall. Now I keep a torque wrench in the truck and log every pass in a notebook. The old hands on my crew say feel is better than a wrench and I get why they think that, but I am not buying it anymore. So who is right here, do you trust your hands or the book, and has anyone seen a failure from doing it by feel?
