My grandkids' games have more rules than my tax return. What happened to simple fun?

Totally feel that about simple fun getting lost. My group tried a board game that had a rulebook thicker than my phone, it was a slog. We ended up just ignoring half the minor scoring rules to focus on the main gameplay loop. Suddenly it was a blast again, way more about laughing and trying crazy moves than tracking tiny points. Sometimes you just have to strip it back to what made you try it in the first place.

We just toss the rulebook and make up our own simpler version, it always works better.
