Trying to decide between a coal forge and a propane forge for my first setup
I've been taking a class at the local community center in Boise for 3 months and now I want to set up my own spot in the garage. I'm stuck between a cheap coal forge I found on craigslist for $150 and a new propane one for around $400. The coal one is way cheaper but I'm worried about the smoke and neighbors, and the propane one feels safer but costs more. Has anyone here started with one and wished they'd gone the other way?
Check your local rules before you commit to coal, because a lot of cities ban or limit it for home use and Boise could be one of them. That smoke is no joke either, it'll coat your garage and your neighbor's laundry line, and a cheap used coal forge often needs new fire bricks and a blower anyway. Propane is the safer bet for a garage setup even at $400, and you won't be fighting your neighbors over it.
