TIL my forge weld failed because I was running the fire too clean, not too dirty
Lost a billet of 1084 and 15n20 in the shop last Tuesday when the weld split right under the hammer, and a guy at the Indiana Blacksmith Association meeting told me to run it a little rich and soak at orange for a 10 count instead of white hot. Ran two more billets that way and both held on the first heat, so does anyone else keep their fire this sooty on purpose or am I just lucky so far?
