Had a chat with a guy at a hammer-in who said my anvil was too clean

Oh boy, I've heard that one before! An older smith once told me the same thing at a guild meeting a few years back, said a clean anvil meant I wasn't using it enough. I think there's some truth to it, but honestly, take that with a grain of salt. Some folks like a bit of patina or rust, others prefer to keep their tools tidy. Your mileage may vary, but as long as you're getting your work done, I wouldn't worry too much about what one guy at a hammer-in thinks.

What exactly did he think was wrong with it? Was it the face looking too polished or did he have a beef with you keeping the horn free of dings? I've run into this mindset before and @abbyl49 is right that some people just prefer a certain look. But is a clean anvil really a problem or is it just old-timer gatekeeping? Like, does a little patina actually help the steel bite better or is that just something people say to sound wise?
