Coal vs propane, which way do you run your forge nowadays?
I burned coal for a decade before switching to propane in 2018 after a shop fire scare, but I still miss how coal let me forge weld without buying extra flux, so what pushed you to pick one fuel over the other?

Coal is still the better fuel for forge welding and I will fight anyone on that. I ran bituminous for 12 years in a little 55 forge and never once needed flux if I kept the fire clean and the joints tight. Propane is easy, sure, but it runs drier and that dry heat is exactly why you end up buying borax by the pound. The fire scare is fair and I get why you switched, but a good hood and a spark screen would have fixed that without giving up the coal. Ngl I keep a propane tank around for small stuff and quick heats, but the second I need a real weld it is coal or nothing. Sounds like you miss it more than you want to admit.
