Why does nobody talk about how fast cheap potting mix turns into concrete?
I filled two 12 inch pots on my Chicago balcony in April with a $6 bag of mix from the corner store, and by mid July I could not push a chopstick into either one. My neighbor's pots, filled the same week with a $14 bag from the garden center, still let water drain through in about 4 seconds. So I am stuck on which side is right: is the cheap stuff fine if you just add perlite yourself, or is it false savings because the roots suffocate before you notice? I tossed in two handfuls of perlite per pot at the start and it still locked up, but maybe I did not use enough. Curious what ratio people here mix in, and whether anyone has had cheap mix stay loose for a full season.
