My balcony lettuce went from scraggly to salad every night after I switched to a $6 shade cloth
My south facing balcony in Phoenix gets brutal afternoon sun, and my lettuce was bolting and turning bitter by mid May. I rigged up a cheap 40% shade cloth from the hardware store on a few bamboo stakes about 2 feet above the pots. That was 6 weeks ago and the difference is wild. The leaves are tender now, no more bolting, and I'm cutting enough for two big salads most nights. Same seeds, same pots, same watering schedule, only the light changed. Has anyone else tried shade cloth on a hot balcony, and what percentage did you go with?
