I called self-watering planters a gimmick for 2 years, now I am not so sure
Two summers ago I laughed at my neighbor's $45 self-watering tomato planter, since I figured any pot with a water tray just meant root rot on my third floor balcony in Chicago. Then I went away for 9 days in July and came back to find his cherry tomatoes fine while my basil was a crispy brown stick. So which is it, are these things actually worth it for people who travel, or did he just get lucky with the weather that week?
