Almost skipped the $3 mesh bags for my balcony tomatoes, now I'm a believer
Last spring on my third floor spot in Portland, I grabbed a pack of cheap mesh produce bags at the checkout just to cover my cherry tomatoes from birds after losing about a dozen to pecks. I figured the mesh would block sun and stunt them, but those six plants gave me the best haul I've had up there, and the fruit under the bags actually ripened first. Did anyone else start with a cheap fix like this and get surprised, or am I just late to something everyone already knew?
