Wasted $60 on a fancy sourdough starter kit

Bought this kit online from a brand called Cultured Baker that promised heirloom grains and perfect bubbles. It came with a tiny jar and a guide that was basically just a pamphlet, the starter died in 3 days. I could have just used flour and water from my pantry for free. Anyone else fall for the hype on these starter kits?

I was one of those people who thought sourdough kits were for suckers. Used to brag to friends about my $2 flour water method. Then my neighbor showed me her $60 Cultured Baker starter and it lasted 6 months before dying. She tried again same kit same result. Something about those dehydrated heirloom grains they use. They're not stable like normal flour. I finally caved and bought one last year. Mine also died on day 4. You're not wrong the pamphlet is garbage.

Totally agree with you. I bought one of those fancy kits too and it died in a week. The instructions are basically useless. They don't tell you about temperature or water quality or anything. I felt like such a fool spending that money when my regular flour and water starter is still going strong after two years. The whole thing is a marketing scam for people who don't know better.
