I built my shed floor on 2x4s instead of 2x6s and it is holding up fine after 3 winters in Minneapolis
Every forum post I read before this build said you absolutely must use 2x6 joists for a 10x12 shed floor, no exceptions. I went with 2x4s on 12 inch centers over 4x4 skids because it was $180 cheaper and I only store a mower, bikes, and some holiday boxes in there. Three Minnesota winters later, including that stretch last January where we hit -14, the floor is flat and nothing has sagged. I checked it with a level last weekend and the worst spot is maybe 1/8 inch off. So is the 2x6 rule really about heavy shop equipment, or are we all just repeating what we read? Curious what loads you all actually put on your floors.
