Used to scrub waterers with a bottle brush every Sunday, now the flock drinks from a $12 nipple bucket and I check it maybe once a week
For my first three springs keeping hens in Rockford I was hauling 5 gallon buckets out to the run every single Sunday and scrubbing algae with a bottle brush, and the water was still green by Wednesday. Then a guy at the feed store mentioned a $12 bucket with poultry nipples screwed into the lid, so I gave it a shot mostly to save my back. The birds took to it in about 10 minutes and I have not touched a bottle brush since. How often is everyone else cleaning their drinkers, or am I the only one who went way too hard on this at the start?
Cleaned mine every other day for the first year, dunked the whole thing in vinegar water and scrubbed the inside with my bare hand like some kind of lunatic. Our summers here in Rockford get hot enough that the water went slimy in two days flat, so I was basically chained to that bucket. Switched to nipples on a 5 gallon and now I rinse it maybe every ten days, more in July when the heat cranks. You lasted longer than I did before figuring it out.
