Free range vs run, my hens voted with their feet this summer
I spent 4 months letting my girls roam the yard in Portland, and all I got was scratched up flower beds and eggs hidden under the porch. Then I built a 10x12 covered run with deep mulch and hung a few cabbage heads from strings last week. Night and day difference, they actually seem calmer and I find every single egg in the nesting boxes now. The run cost me about $180 in lumber and wire, but I stopped losing sleep over hawk worries too. Has anyone else tried mixed setups where you let them out only in the evening instead of full days? I'm curious if that keeps the dust baths in the run or not.
