What a local hunter said about trail markers changed my whole route plan

Last month I was on the Ozark Trail near Steel Creek and this older fella was gutting a deer not far off the path. We got to talking and he said the painted blazes on trees are fine, but they get you lost when the leaves turn thick in fall. He showed me how he follows the worn ground and creek crossings instead. I always trusted those blue diamonds completely, but now I carry a paper map and check it at every fork. Has anyone else switched from blazes to land features after a bad experience?
